Hariko (papier-maché) masks made by Furukawa in Kyoto
Made from five layers of paper that is moulded on wooden blocks (see process photos), then hand painted. These are all unique.
These are hand made by Furukawa-san in Kyoto.
Each one has a string on the back for hanging and some have tiny holes on the sides to attach string if you like.
These are decorative - for hanging on the wall or sitting on a bookshelf.
These are a traditional folk craft in Japan. Furukawa-san was inspired to start mask making from when he used to tour all over Japan during his days playing the banjo. Furukawa-san makes these from his studio in Kyoto in his old family shop.
